Rewang: Together We Build Relations Between Students

By: Syahmira Yusoff

SERDANG, February 5 - For the process of poultry and fish slaughter, the preparation of materials, cooking processes, serving and cleaning are among the activities carried out by the participants of Kem Pemantapan Organisasi LEADERS 2020, attended by 61 students of College 12, UPM. The camp was held for 5 days and 4 nights, and participants were required to prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner by practicing the concept of gotong-royong.

The practice of gotong-royong was nearly dismissed due to time constraints, the culture of the ever-growing younger generation of meritocalism, which is an independent lifestyle and a resilient community spirit.

“The activities are often performed by the villagers, especially by the elderly. It’s a miracle to witness the younger generation conducting this particular activity. Nowadays, most of the community prefer to book catering services, instead of merewang.” – Hafiz

The adopted approach is able to inculcate noble values, particularly the value of helping one another. This will be able to build one of the best platforms for the people involved for their upcoming future.

“I truly believe that the younger generations have to uphold the culture by conducting this activity for our younger generations which also able to create a good bond between each other.” – Hanisah

For the younger generations, who were born and bred in cities, will be able to gain an unprecedented experience in the activity known as “merewang”. They should always remember, as the saying goes, “alone, we can do so little, together, we can do so much”.
