K12 STENCIL ART WORKSHOP @ ASWARA

TWELFTH COLLEGE SESSION 2025/2026

SERDANG, JUNE 20th – K12 Stencil Art Workshop @ ASWARA was a program organized by the Secretariat of Culture and Arts, College Representative Council, Twelfth College Session 2025/2026, in collaboration with Management of Twelfth College. The programme aimed to foster Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) students’ interest in traditional visual arts while encouraging them to express their creativity and imagination through artistic practices. Through a series of printmaking activities, participants had the opportunity to explore various techniques and motifs in creative arts, fostering a deeper appreciation for traditional art forms. The enthusiastic participation throughout the programme also nurtured qualities such as precision, innovation, confidence and perseverance among the students.

The programme began at 8.30 a.m. with participant registration and breakfast, followed by a short briefing on the day’s itinerary. At 9.00 a.m., participants departed by bus to the National Academy of Cultural Arts and National Heritage (ASWARA), arriving at 10.00 a.m. at the Faculty of Fine Arts, where the workshop was conducted.

The first activity focused on handmade papermaking and was demonstrated by Mrs Aqmar, an ASWARA alumna. She introduced the participants to the materials, techniques and step-by-step process involved in producing handmade paper. The activity began by mixing shredded paper pulp with coloured dyes before immersing a special mould into the mixture to form paper of the desired shape and thickness. The excess water was then removed using a sponge before the paper was left to dry under the sun. Following the demonstration, participants had the opportunity to create their own handmade paper with guidance from ASWARA student facilitators. They were encouraged to experiment with different colours, techniques and patterns, resulting in vibrant and unique handmade paper that reflected each participant’s creativity.

After the lunch break, the programme continued with a lino printmaking workshop conducted by Mr Aniq, an ASWARA alumnus. He began the session with a demonstration of the fundamental techniques of lino printing, including transferring designs onto lino blocks, safely carving the surface using specialised tools and producing clean, high-quality prints. Participants then created their own lino print artworks under the guidance of Mr Aniq and ASWARA facilitators. The workshop showcased a variety of creative prints while highlighting the importance of patience, precision and creativity in the printmaking process.

The lino printmaking session concluded at 3.30 p.m. and was followed by an appreciation ceremony to express gratitude to ASWARA and the instructors for sharing their expertise and experience throughout the workshop. The programme concluded with a group photography session before participants departed for Universiti Putra Malaysia at 4.30 p.m., bringing home valuable knowledge, practical skills and meaningful experiences in the fields of handmade papermaking and traditional printmaking.
